BA in English Studies

The English major helps students obtain mastery of the English language which is necessary in both teaching and non-teaching careers. There is equal emphasis on language, literature and linguistics. While the courses provide an appropriate linguistic background for prospective teachers of English, they are also conducive to enabling students to use English accurately and fluently in both oral and written communication for all purposes. In the literature courses, the English program aims to help students become aware of the historical, social, political, philosophical and religious backgrounds against which literature must be studied.

CSI 200
Computer Literacy
This course is an introductory Non-Technical survey of Computer Systems and a study of the social impact of computers. Topics include introduction to the Hardware components of a computer system, input and output devices, storage devices, communications and connectivity, Internet, security, information systems and deep exposition to software applications such as text editors, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

ENG 201
Composition & Rhetoric I
This is the students' first major encounter with critical thinking, reading, and writing. Students are exposed to themes from different disciplines and are expected to discuss them, read and write about them. The essay of all its types is the writing format dealt with in the first half. A research paper, 5-10 pages in length, follows in the second half.

Composition & Rhetoric II
In this course, students are expected to engage in deep critical thinking and to construct written arguments in which they decide on a controversial issue. They are helped to think of argument in terms of having an opinion, voicing it persuasively, and supporting it adequately. Hence, they will be analyzing debatable issues appearing in writing and will be introduced to the elements and structure of argument, including the Toulmin model, the rhetorical situation, the traditional categories of claims, the types of proof, logical fallacies and the Rogerian argument. Reading, critical thinking, and writing are taught as integrated processes. There will be essays for analysis, as well as essay topics for development.

English Communication Skills
Students' communication competence is enhanced by learning the techniques and strategies of public speaking. No other skills are so closely tied to a student's professional success as communication skills. Using what they have learned in other English language courses, students practice and communicate, guided by the fundamental principles of public speaking, and provided with a forum for applying these principles, through a variety of instructional strategies - discussion, class workshops.

Active Learning & Research Methodology

This is an introductory course that aims at bridging the gap between school and college and develops the student's skills in three areas related to active learning and research methodology. In the first area, the student is introduced to the university's rules and regulations and general guidelines. In the second area, the student hones his/her study skills, namely, developing schedules, improving concentration, developing time-saving test-taking strategies, taking good notes, improving listening and reading skills, and applying strategies to avoid test anxiety. In the third area, the student is introduced to research, armed with the theory, methodology, and techniques of the research process, starting with conceptualization and ending with report writing.

Western Civilization
This course consists of readings and discussion of the classic great books of Western Civilization, focusing on literary, philosophical, and historical works from ancient Greece and Rome. Readings will be selected from authors such as Homer, Virgil, Ovid, Herodotus, Thucydides, Livy, Tacitus, Plutarch, Plato, Aristotle, Epictetus, Epicurus, Cicero, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Plotinus, and Augustine.

Introduction To English Literature
This course introduces students to the greatness and variety of English literature by means of studying some major works in verse and prose selected from Chaucer to the present day.

Reading Literature
Students will be helped to develop critical skills for interpreting and evaluating literature in the major genres: fiction, drama and poetry, with a focus on significant representative works from a variety of cultures and historical periods.

ENG 220
Reading Poetry
This course is an introduction to the analysis of poetry. It considers a range of models through readings from various periods of English and American Poetry, examining such elements as voice, figure of speech, diction, tone and poetic form. The study of poems will stress their cultural context so that the students may develop their ability to appreciate poetry.

ENG 230
British Novel
Students will trace the development of the British novel from 1850 through the modern period. Representative novelists may include George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, D. H. Lawrence, James Joyce and Virginia Woolf.

American Novel
There will be a study of the American novel, emphasizing its development in form and theme, its intersections with American history and culture, and its role within the context of literary movements, such as Romanticism, Realism and Naturalism.

ENG 240
Introduction To Literary Study
The course is an intensive study of relationships between writer, text and reader as they bear upon literary interpretation and theory. Primary focus will be on the basic issues and assumptions underlying literary study and on varying approaches to practical criticism. Readings: Selected literary texts, essays in practical criticism and critical theory.

The development of Shakespeare's dramatic arts will be explored, with emphasis on character, language, theme, form and structure in comedies, histories and tragedies of the 16th and 17th century.

This course is designed to provide grounding in the general understanding of English as used in the world of media. True, there are no exclusive varieties of language for the media. Nonetheless, such salient features of linguistically distinctive styles employed thereof lend themselves to observant reading and intensive study. Analysis of such typical examples of language use as those encountered in newspapers, radio or television broadcasting, on-line news, and sports commentary will show the student how English can be adapted to suit any circumstances or needs. The principles of journalinguistics will also be surveyed from a sociolinguistics point of view.

Women Writers
This course highlights critical writing which examines questions of identity and community in the fiction of writers. It considers how identities and societies are dramatized in particular works of fiction, and how these works reflect cultural communities outside the fictional frame - often the communities in which their authors live and work.

Short Story
Students will read some representative short stories in which they will examine the salient features that contribute to meaningful expression of human experience in the form of condensed pieces of literature. They will also explore the moral dimension of the story in question in the light of modern man's set of ethical issues. The literary and stylistic aspects of the short story will receive their share in both class discussions and students' projects.

Methods Of Literary Criticism
This course involves investigation and application of a particular critical method such as Freudian, Marxist, historical, structural or mythic criticism. By focusing on only one critical method among many in the discipline, students gain experience with an important literary analysis, using it to discover new dimensions in a variety of literary texts.

Introduction To Linguistics
This course is designed to enable students to gain insights into and understanding of human language and linguistics. The course provides a concise and lucid outline of the ways in which language has been defined, described, and explored, and guides students towards further exploration of any language they have learned or may learn. Since the course will make complex ideas in linguistics clear without compromising their intrinsic complexity, the concepts will be more readily understood without diminishing their intellectual interest.

Principles Of Language
The study topics include language acquisition, language structure, language variation, and languages of the world in terms of classification and viability.

History Of The English Language
The course aims at broadly tracing the history, development and structure of the language from beginnings to modern English, including foreign influences on English, basic tendencies of the language, grammatical constructs, and regional usage.

ENG 350
Introduction To English Phonology
Phonology is a study of the systemic deployment of speech sounds at the service of the morpho-syntactic structure of language. This course aims at studying the ways in which sounds are used systematically to form words and utterances, through analysis of phonological features and rules, as well as through study of theoretical issues. The course starts by examining the role of vocal organs and provides students with descriptive methods for classifying speech sounds and representing them by written symbols. The course proceeds into the analysis of distinctive features which phonemes are made of, special attention being devoted to phonotactics, phonological rules, and the processes involved in applying such rules to the surface structure of a certain language.

ENG 395
Special Topics In English
This course varies in content, depending on both the instructor's choice of material and students' area of priorities, as regards either their linguistic or their literary preference. The selected topics may range from those related to applied linguistics to those pertaining to furtherance of literary appreciation of famous works. Included too is the field of focused grammatical analysis of aspects of modern-day English.

ENG 405
English Morphology And Syntax
Students of this class will be assisted in learning to understand the principles that can enable them to do grammatical analysis independently, with confidence. There will be discussion of the classifications of English sentences, and the syntactic rules that account for such structures. Furthermore, students must become able not only to use acceptable standard English, but to explain to others why any given form or structure is the best one. Nevertheless, while the accuracy in usage is emphasized, the scholarly tradition of prescriptive grammar will not replace the descriptive approach, which aims at recording facts and describing the constitutive rules of the actual language as comprehensively as possible.

ENG 415
Contemporary English Grammar
Assessment of language phenomena will be provided by means of studying English grammatical systems and their functions. There will be analysis of stem and word formation, morphological processes, syntactic structures and their functions, and language universals and typologies. As students explore the relationship of morphology, syntax and semantics, along with excursions into lexicology and pragmatics, questions of grammatical and lexical acceptability will be surveyed with special emphasis on the treatment of usage modern-day English.

Semantics & Generative Transformational Syntax
Contemporary approaches to the relation between meaning and from will be received, with special emphasis on works within the Chomskian tradition. There will be a comprehensive exploration of semantics, including theories of meaning and the relationship between semantics and conceptual structure, semantics and cognition in language acquisition, and the relationship between meaning and use.

Survey Of American Literature
This course involves the study of the major works and literary movements in American Literature, first from Colonial Period to the American Renaissance (1588 - 1860), and second from 1860 to the present. In the latter part, the course provides cultural and historical approaches offering analysis of the twentieth century. Thus, the student will explore the richness and range of American Literature.

Studies In The Relationships Of Lit. & Visual Arts
Throughout history, literature had close relations with the other arts (such as painting and sculpture, music and theatre); more recently these relations have extended to the cinema. Students are encouraged to take an interdisciplinary approach in analyzing the interconnectedness of film, literature, the fashion culture, and other arts.
