Together for Safe and Sustainable Cities

The Department of Computer and Communications Engineering at AUST organized a seminar on Defensive Driving Basics. The objective of this event was to help the youth avoid road crashes and apply defensive driving basics. The event took place on November 23rd, 2017, in the presence of Former Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui, President and Founder of Adel Metni Foundation, Mr. Georges Metni, deans of the AUST faculties, and Engineering and Computer Science students. The event was attended by around 100 students. It was organized with the help of the AUST IEEE Student Branch.

The event began with a gathering at the Office of AUST President Hiam Sakr. Thereafter, the guests convened at the Lecture Hall. After the Lebanese National Anthem, Dr. Roger Achkar, Chairperson of the Department of Computer & Communications Engineering, welcomed the attendees and stated that this event is one of the activities that the CCE Department of the Faculty of Engineering undertakes to expose the students to life safety measurements.

After that he introduced H.E. Sehnaoui by stating: “I would like to start today’s event by welcoming a public figure, an entrepreneur, and a role model for youth. When you see Nicolas Sehnaoui on TV, you don’t think only about a politician commenting on what is happening in Lebanon but a man who takes initiatives towards the betterment and development of Technology. He is there to promote events related to technology, IOT, mobile evolution or entrepreneurship, by either giving a speech, sitting on a discussion panel or supporting Lebanese youth. Stars of Science program is a good example. He was the first to support the Lebanese finalist Talent Fouad Makssoud”, who in fact won the competition.

In his word, H.E. Sehnaoui congratulated Adel Metni Foundation and AUST for this initiative. He also talked about the importance of having such programs to enlighten students about the importance of safeguarding their lives by applying safe driving basics.

Mr. Georges Metni, talked about the organization and its program.

The seminar was so interactive that students were enthusiastic and interested in applying for the program.
Adel Metni Foundation is a non- profit organization working on Road Safety Management, Education, Consultancy, alongside Defensive Driving Training & Motor Sport Orientation, in Lebanon & MENA.
The Foundation is Young; however, the impact of its programs is notable.

The Foundation is currently working with 5 municipalities through the registered prototype model developed by Georges Metni, which is entitled LERS (Local Empowerment for Road Safety), aiming to create safe & sustainable cities endorsing road safety programs locally, on the educational, enforcement, engineering & emergency levels. They have recently launched AMF TV- a new platform addressing road safety problems with an educational purpose. The foundation is offering the defensive driving training with Renault. They also work with Companies for fleet safety management. Also, the foundation gives training courses in Motor Sport & Karting.
