Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is an international extra-curricular academic activity in which students are to act and think like ambassadors of a country they are assigned, addressing contemporary international issues. MUN simulations educate students on diplomacy, international relations, the United Nations and most importantly it makes of them aware and educated global citizens. Additionally, MUN builds individuals’ confidence, leadership and diplomatic skills.
MUN is an exercise in research, public speaking, and teamwork, by which students are assigned countries and committees; each of which holds two topics. Students attend a three-day conference where they debate among themselves of what should be done and how, and present one or more draft resolution(s) on the assigned topics.
The American University of Science and Technology newly founded club, MUN AUST Club, had the opportunity to participate in the 3rd edition of Beirut International Model United Nations conference (BEYMUN) that was held at the American University of Beirut (AUB) this year from the 13th until the 15th of April. It hosted delegations from all Lebanese universities, including LAU, AUB, NDU, Balamand, BAU, and international delegations from France and Turkey.
Two months of harsh training and commitment, a three-day conference of intense debates and hard work on drafting resolutions, AUST’s 14 member delegation was not only complimented by the BEYMUN Chairs on their outstanding performance but also won awards. The first award was awarded to AUST engineering student Bernard Maacron, also the team leader of the club; he won the Best Delegate Award in the Historical Security Council which is the hardest committee in BEYMUN. The second award was given to AUST international affair student Fatima Al Sabeh, who won the Honorable Mention Award in the Social Humanitarian Cultural Committee. And above all, in their first participation the MUN AUST Club delegation in BEYMUN 2018 won the Best Delegation Award against all the universities and international delegations participating, where the outcome of each and every delegate performance is taken into consideration and hence making the award an individual award as equally as a group one. The Club’s motto is “Strive for success” and thus a promise for many more sparkling achievements.
